Planned road works in the North West – summary for
Monday, 6 June to Sunday, 12 June 2016
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday, 3 June, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

    M55 drainage works
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway - between junction 3 and junction 1 - will be closed from Monday (6 June) until Sunday, 26 June as work takes place to repair the drainage system and reduce the potential of flooding from nearby fields. A 50 mph speed limit will also be in place past the roadworks.
A full overnight carriageway closure will be needed at the start and end of the project to allow the traffic management to be installed and removed. A signed diversion along local roads will be in place between junction 3 and junction 1 during the 2 overnight closures.
M57 Junction 4 slip roads resurfacing
Overnight resurfacing of all 4 entry and exit slip roads at junction 4 of the M57 will start on Monday (6 June) or shortly after. The work will last for 2 weeks between 10pm and 5am each night (or 7am at weekends). Each of the slip roads will be closed at various times with clearly signed diversions.
M58 Junction 4 Cycle Improvement Scheme
As part of our work to improve facilities for cyclists and pedestrians over the M58 we are carrying out bridge parapet modifications. To allow the parapet work to be done safely there will be a 9am to 5am closure of the carriageway on Tuesday night (7 June) with a further closure possible on Wednesday night (8 June). Cleary-signed diversions will be in place.
M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway
Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway.
More information about the project is available on the project website: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m6-junctions-16-19-smart-motorway/
    M6 junctions 19 to 20
A £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers is underway with narrow lanes, 50 mph speed limit and use of the hard shoulder as a running lane in places. The first phase of overnight – 10pm to 5am - work to remove traffic management (bollards and safety fencing) from the motorway so that normal lane widths can be restored to the carriageways will start on Wednesday (8 June). This will require 2 of the 3 northbound carriageway lanes to be closed overnight on Wednesday and Thursday (9 June). On Saturday night (11 June) there will be an 11pm to 5am total closure of the northbound carriageway between junction 19 and junction 20 with a clearly-signed diversion in place. Lane closures will take place along the southbound carriageway the following week.
More information about the project is available on the project website at: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/M6-junctions-19-20-vehicle-restraint-system-works-and-bridge-strengthening-works
    M6 junction 27 to junction 29
Surfacing works have now started on the northbound and southbound carriageway. This will be undertaken Monday to Friday between the hours of 9pm and 5am, for completion in July. To facilitate the works, lane closures will be required as well as slip road closures at junction 27 only. Diversion routes will be in place.
    M6 junction 34: Lancaster
Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34. The work also includes occasional M6 carriageway and slip road closures detailed in weekly traffic bulletins available here: http://heyshamlink.lancashire.gov.uk/
    M60 junction 8: Sale to M62 junction 20: Rochdale
A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.
The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017. A series of carriageway closures is planned throughout June for cantilevers, gantries and a programme of maintenance. See the project page for details: www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m60-junction-8-to-m62-junction-20

M60 Junction 16 and Junction 15 ground survey
We’ll be carrying out 3 weeks of overnight ground survey work between Junction 16 and Junction 15 of the anti-clockwise M60 - approximately 200 yards west of the A666 Clifton overbridge – on or shortly after Monday (6 June). When work is taking place the anti-clockwise carriageway will be closed between 10pm and 5am (or until 7am at weekends) each night. The closure will be between junction 16 and junction 14 with a clearly signed diversion route in place.
    M62 junctions 9 to 11
Work lasting 4 months to improve the safety barriers began in early February. Work will take place Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm. However, there will be occasions where overnight and weekend working will be required. During the works, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will apply.
On occasions, lane closures will also be required. Clearly signed diversions will be in place.
    M65 Junction 1
We’ve been resurfacing the eastbound entry slip road at junction 1 during 7 nights of work with a break over the bank holiday weekend. The slip road will be closed on the nights the resurfacing is taking place – between 10pm and 5am each night or 7am when the overnight work finishes on a Saturday or Sunday. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place.
A55 Junction 38 (‘Posthouse’ roundabout) carriageway Repairs
We’ll be resurfacing sections of the carriageway at junction 38 of the A55 over 3 nights from Monday night (6 June). The work will take place between 9pm and 5am each night with the following closures: A55 junction 38 eastbound entry slip road and designated link road from the southbound A483 onto the eastbound (2 nights) and closure of eastbound A55 between Junctions 38 and 40 (1 night). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place.
    A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17. More information is available on the project website: http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/A556-Knutsford-to-Bowdon-Improvement
    A56 Rising Bridge roundabout
Work has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden. Works will be carried out daily between 10pm and 5am, and will involve single closures on A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place. Works are scheduled for completion at the end of July.
    A56 resurfacing between A680 and A679
A 4 week project to resurface the A56 between Rising Bridge roundabout with the A680 Manchester/Blackburn Road and the A679 Burnley Road started on Tuesday, 24 May. All the work will be done on week nights only and between 10pm and 5am each night - with either the northbound or carriageway closed during the overnight closures and clearly-signed diversions will be in place.
    A590 Greenodd
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
    A66 Kirkby Thore
Work started on Monday, 23 May on safety improvements. During the work 2 or 3 way traffic lights will be in place to manage traffic past the installation works but only during quieter parts of the day. There will be a break in the work over the bank holiday and Appleby Horse Fair periods and it is due to be completed by Sunday, 26 June.
A66 Braithwaite to Portinscale safety improvements
Work to improve footpaths, cycleways, road markings and traffic signs started on Monday, 9 May lasting for up to 4 weeks.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place but usually between 9am and 4pm – outside peak travel times - to help reduce inconvenience to road users.
    A66 Embleton
Work to reduce flood risk on a mile stretch of the A66 at Embleton began in January and is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Temporary traffic lights operate 24 hours a day for the safety of crews and drivers. Full road closures in both directions will also be required on some nights between 8pm and 6am, and at some weekends.
When the road is closed, diversions for HGVs and other vehicles will be clearly signed. Drivers are advised to use the A591 and the A595. This route is not suitable for HGVs which should use the M6 and A595.

The closure of Town Lane roundabout resulted in traffic chaos & gridlock with some of the most ridiculous driving I've ever witnessed. At one point down Folkestone Rd a driver of a Scooby drove in the right hand lane towards Tesco at high speed to over take the standing traffic & nearly had a couple of head on collisions. Later the driver of a small car tried the same near to the Tesco roundabout almost resulting in another couple of head on collisions. It took me an hour to travel 100 yards from Tesco :(
Standing traffic on Town Lane, Scarisbrick New Rd, Everton Rd, Ovington Drive, Cheltnam way, Norwood Rd & Folestone Rd.
